February 11, 2010 - William M. Brown, President UTC Fire & Security, has been named an Honorary Battalion Chief for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). At a ceremony February 9 at FDNY headquarters, Mr. Brown became the first honorary chief named by newly appointed Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. UTC Fire & Security is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“I am delighted to bestow this honor on Bill Brown,” said Commissioner Cassano. “The FDNY and UTC Fire & Security share a goal of keeping New Yorkers safe from the risks of fire. Since 2002, we have partnered on fire safety education programs and firefighter training, and Bill’s support is invaluable. We look forward to continuing this relationship.”

The FDNY protects more than 8 million residents and an area of 321.8 square miles, according to the Department.  UTC Fire & Security, through its Kidde division, supports the FDNY’s mission via a partnership with WABC-TV and the station’s Operation 7 Save A Life program, having donated 180,000 smoke alarms to NYC families since 2002.

“It is a privilege to partner with Commissioner Cassano and the FDNY, and I am humbled to be recognized by New York City’s bravest, who every day put their own lives on the line to save others,” said Brown.

Kidde has also assisted in educating NYC residents about how to protect themselves from carbon monoxide (CO), supported NYC legislation requiring CO alarms in all dwellings, and worked to raise awareness of the New York State law (“Amanda’s Law”) requiring CO alarms in all residential dwellings, which takes effect February 22, 2010.
